Army rank, ex-soldier to be charged for tomb raiding

A serving member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and an ex-soldier are likely to appear in court today for allegedly breaking into the tomb of slain Cove and John businessman, Kumar Singh, Tuesday night.

Reports state that the men are likely to appear in the Vigilance Magistrate's Court.

They allegedly broke into Singh's tomb at Enmore, East Coast Demerara and removed some pieces of jewellery from the corpse.

The two suspects and a third man were subsequently arrested.

Singh was riddled with bullets two Thursdays ago by a gang of men at his Cove and John, East Coast Demerara home.

His brother-in-law, Brazilian miner Jose D'Acruz Arauijo, was also wounded. After shooting Singh and terrorising his family, the gunmen fled into the backlands with cash and jewellery.

The victim died while undergoing emergency surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation about one hour after the ordeal had ended.

Police said that they recovered a warhead, four spent shells and a live .45 round at the scene.
