The Chinese restaurateur who was shot on Tuesday
night during a foiled robbery attempt succumbed
yesterday afternoon in the Intensive Care Unit of the
Georgetown Hospital.
Yun-Sun Chen, 49, who was shot in the right side
abdomen at his Hadfield Street and Louisa Row restaurant
around 8 pm, was unconscious up to the time of his
death.
Chen lost a considerable amount of blood as a result
of the gunshot wound and sustained internal injuries. He
died some time after 3 pm.
Police so far have been unable to apprehend the two
suspects who escaped empty-handed in a car that was
parked across the road. Up to late yesterday evening,
the police had not issued a statement on this latest
fatal shooting.
When Stabroek News visited the hospital at midday,
although in shock, Chen's daughter Li Ping managed to
speak about her father's condition.
The young woman said an x-ray revealed that the
bullet punctured her father's liver then pieced one of
two blood vessels located near the spine.
According to her, her father lost five litres of
blood and his condition was listed as critical. A
relative was consoling Chen's weeping wife.
Li Ping told this newspaper that during the six to
seven years that her father had been operating the
business, there had been several robbery attempts but no
one was ever shot.
Stabroek News was told that when Chen arrived at the
hospital he was left sitting in the emergency area for
over an hour bleeding profusely from the wound and
crying out for pain.
Li Ping told this newspaper that her father had been
away from the family for two months and had only
returned on the day of the shooting.
"My father was murdered.... I didn't get to spend
anytime with him," she stated before bursting into
tears.
This newspaper was informed that Chen was shot
through some grillwork that separated him from the men.
A short distance away, another grill door was open, but
the gunmen did not use it. Li Ping described her father
as a very loving man who was liked by many people. She
said she feels like a part of her is gone.
On the night of the shooting two customers who were
in the restaurant, said that they were having a
conversation and noticed when two men entered the shop.
They said that they heard no demands being made.
They said they only knew something was amiss when a
shot was fired and they saw the men exiting the
restaurant. One young woman who was outside the
restaurant however recalled hearing one of the men
saying, "gimme it, gimme it".
Many residents expressed shock at the incident and
several went to the family's home to offer their
sympathy.
