An Annandale man is in the High Dependency
Unit of the Georgetown Hospital after being
shot by one of three gunmen who invaded his
home on Wednesday night.
The gunmen after terrorizing the man's wife
and son escaped with over $300,000 in cash and
jewellery, two cellular phones and a DVD
player.
The police patrol that safeguards the
community on a nightly basis never arrived on
the scene until the 15-minute ordeal was over
and the criminals had long escaped.
Kawall
Parbarat, 42, of 115 Persaud
Street, Annandale South, who was shot in the
hand and neck, is in a critical but stable
condition.
According to reports, around 8 pm Parbarat
was relaxing in a hammock outside his bottom
flat house while his wife and son were inside.
Three masked gunmen coming from the back of
the yard pounced on him and beat him badly
with their gun butts. His family, upon hearing
the commotion, attempted to investigate but
was stopped by two of the gunmen. The men
ordered Parbarat's wife, Camilla Goolab to
hand over jewellery and money which she did.
Before leaving the house the men also picked
up the phones that were lying on a bed and the
DVD player. Once outside one of the men shot
Parbarat twice before the trio escaped through
an opening in the back fence.
Parbarat was later taken to the hospital
accompanied by a policeman and he was
immediately carried to the operating room.
Goolab told Stabroek News yesterday that
she is afraid to return home and she and her
son are at present lodging at a relative's
home.
She stated that her husband is not speaking
much because of the wound to his neck and the
loss of seven of his bottom teeth.
Recounting what happened that night she
said that shortly before 8 pm after eating
dinner her husband went into the hammock. She
said that she was on the telephone and her son
was on the computer when they heard scuffling
outside.
"Before we could go and see what was
happening, two men wearing mask came in the
house with a gun. One of them reach my son and
said give him the thing."
The woman still in shock over the incident,
stated that at one point they threatened to
kill her son who was lying on the floor and
that was when she decided to hand over her
valuables.
After handing over about $150,000 cash the
bandit said "this is not enough."
She said that she then remembered that she
had a tin filled with jewellery (about
$150,000 worth) under her bed and without
hesitation handed it over to the gunman, who
had followed her into the room.
"He opened it and check then he open
the wardrobe drawer and tumble up everything.
He saw the cell phones on the bed and picked
them up. He told the other bandit who was in
the house to pick up the DVD player."
While the two were leaving the house, she
said, they told the third gunman who was
outside with her husband to kill him but she
began pleading.
Shortly after she heard two shots then
silence. Goolab stated that they found her
husband lying on the concrete bleeding
profusely from his head.
"I thought he was dead and I start to
holler. Then we see him lift his head."
She said that they helped him inside and
locked up the house but because they feared
the gunmen returning they went over to their
neighbour's house.
A taxi took them to the Vigilance Police
station where a policeman accompanied them to
the hospital.
A neighbour told Stabroek News yesterday
afternoon that the police were at the house
that morning and found spent shells. (Zoisa
