A
twenty-five year old mother of one was killed on the Rupert Craig Highway
around 4:00 h. yesterday, close to Selina’s Night Spot, after the car
she was driving crashed into a lamp post and tore into a nearby fence
before coming to a stop. The brand new car was written off.
Dead is Melissa Yankana of 43 Bel Air Village, East Coast Demerara.
Police said it’s a miracle that Yankana who was travelling alone,
managed to get out of the wrecked car without help. But witnesses
confirmed that after the car came to a stop, she got out, walked a few
steps then collapsed onto the roadway. She was later pronounced dead on
arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Yankana’s
brother, Marlon, in deep anguish yesterday, told the Sunday Chronicle that
his sister had left to go out earlier in the night and was returning home
when tragedy struck. He said that the car had only been bought three days
earlier.
Marlon said that around 5:00 hours yesterday the family received the news
that Melissa had been involved in an accident, and they raced to the
scene.
When they got there her body was just being taken away by a hearse.
Melissa leaves to mourn her parents Harry Yankana and Farida Khan; two
brothers, two sisters and a five year old daughter, Jada.
