Corruption at the ferry stellings has been going on for years

Suitcase loss  Outgoing passenger Betsy-Ground-Gail

Dear Editor,

Bribery and corruption is something that will never stop in Guyana; it's not something new, it's something everyone looks for when the day begins. For years and years there has been corruption at the ferry stellings at Rosignol and New Amsterdam, but no one cares. Azaam Hamid from overseas comments about it in SN on September 5 ('Bribery and corruption at New Amsterdam ferry stelling'), but there is not a week goes by when someone does not comment about it in the papers. It is not the fault of the customers who pay the bribes to cross on the ferry; it is not the fault of the police; it is not the fault of the gatemen; it is the fault of the higher administration. They do not hear or see.

There is never a system in place at those stellings; policemen and gatemen will be in front, and at the back the buses and hire-cars never join the line. Whoever has money and contacts is alright; whoever does not, has to suffer.

No one cares; laws and systems are only for a couple of days. People who live here are accustomed to this, but the problem is when foreigners arrive and see what is going on, they are taken aback because they have never seen a system like this anywhere in the world.

Yours faithfully,

Zakir Ally
