He ended up receiving a severe thrashing at the hands of residents, before being handed over to the police.

It all began at around 22:15 hrs on Thursday when the suspect stopped taxi driver Dennis Layne on South Road and requested to be taken to Atlantic Gardens .

On reaching his destination, Layne's ‘passenger' exited the taxi, then quickly re-entered the vehicle under the pretext that he had left his cellular phone inside.

A source said that at the same time, another man who reportedly had a handgun emerged from a clump of bushes.

Realising that he was about to be robbed, Layne attempted to drive away, but the ‘passenger' grabbed him and the two began to struggle.

Police said that Layne eventually crashed his car into a nearby concrete fence, resulting in the man struggling with Layne being injured.

This robber, who was unarmed, was effectively trapped inside the vehicle.

The commotion alerted Atlantic Gardens residents who, after realising that a robbery was taking place, approached in numbers and began to rain blows on the hapless carjacker. By this time the accomplice had fled.

The beaten thief was eventually handed over to ranks at the Sparendaam Police Station.

He is likely to be charged shortly.

The driver's action probably saved his life and at the same time helped take a dangerous criminal off the streets.

One resident said that other drivers should take a leaf from Layne's book and save their lives while protecting their properties.
