Dear Editor,
I wish to highlight a corrupt practice that is taking place
daily at both the Rosignol and New Amsterdam Stellings in
Berbice. I was reliably informed by a driver who plies the
Georgetown Moleson Creek route and is himself involved.
He indicated that selected taxi drivers, a tout and certain
officials are involved. The taxi driver occupies a space. The
space is then marketed by the tout for three thousand dollars.
When the deal is sealed the taxi would vacate and allow the bus
to slip in. The bus would be accommodated. This is a daily
occurrence.
Now if ten spaces are sold on both sides that would be
20x$3,000 - $60,000 to be split between those involved.
This might not appear all that corrupt. But when there is a
long line, and a vehicle comes from behind and squeezes into a
space created by another vehicle, it is somewhat depressing. It
is also a slap in the faces of both the superintendent and the
clerk of works who are fine workers and have to cope with these
malpractices.
The repairs at the New Amsterdam Stelling might be good but I
feel the timing is bad, because now is the peak period for
visitors to our country.
Yours faithfully,
Tajpaul Gainda
